The APB BART test detects aerobic and anaerobic bacteria that produce organic fatty acids which lower the pH of the environment. The manufacturer quality controls this test with the following organisms, Citrobacter freundii (ATCC 8090), Enterobacter cloacae (ATCC 23355), and Proteus vulgaris (13315). These are common test organisms, but may not be major contributors to acid corrosion in the oil and gas industry. Many other organisms that can drop the pH of the environment by creating organic fatty acids will be detected. They recommend using both the APB BART and SRB BART when testing for corrosion in the oil and gas field. The Sulfate Reducing Bacteria (SRB) test can detect other acid creating bacteria that may not be detected in the APB BART. The SRB BART will detect the common nuisance bacteria, Desulfovibrio.
